CSI Anbu Illam
Residential Special Education, Care and Vocational Development
A Home of Care, Learning and Belonging

CSI Anbu Illam in Thanjavur is a ministry of the Church of South India (CSI) Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, established in 1974 to provide care, special education, training and opportunities for children with intellectual disabilities. The Home brings together residential care, education, developmental support and vocational preparation, with a focus on helping each child develop skills, confidence and greater independence.
Located in the St. Peter’s Church Compound, Manambuchavadi, Thanjavur, Anbu Illam continues the Diocese’s commitment to children who need specialised educational, developmental and residential support.
A window for every child who lives here
As on 31 August 2026, CSI Anbu Illam provides residential care and support to 66 children. The current residential population comprises 46 boys and 20 girls.
The 2026–27 institutional record also indicates that the children come from diverse social and community backgrounds. The Home’s residential population includes children who are semi-orphaned, children whose parents are both living, and children who have experienced parental abandonment, underscoring the importance of a stable and supportive residential environment.
What the Home gives each child
A Journey of Service Since 1974
Established in 1974, Anbu Illam has served children and families in the Thanjavur region for more than five decades. The institution functions as a residential special education school and vocational rehabilitation centre under the administration of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese and is recognised by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
Learning for Independence
The educational programme is designed to go beyond classroom learning. Children are supported to develop communication, self-care, practical and social skills according to their abilities and pace. For older students, vocational and pre-vocational activities provide opportunities to develop practical skills and work habits.
Early Support for Young Children
Anbu Illam also provides an Early Intervention Centre for young children, with parents involved in the child’s developmental learning. The programme combines trained teaching support and physiotherapy-based intervention to strengthen developmental abilities and help families support their children.
A Home Built on Dignity and Inclusion
Anbu Illam seeks to nurture ability rather than define children by disability. Its work is centred on care, dignity, learning, participation and inclusion. The Home aims to help children grow in confidence, develop practical abilities and experience a sense of belonging within family and society.
A Ministry Sustained by Community
The Home’s continuing work is strengthened by the support of the Diocese, congregations, well-wishers and donors. Such support contributes to the children’s everyday care, education, training and developmental needs. Individuals and organisations wishing to support the ministry are encouraged to contact the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese for current needs and approved avenues of partnership.
