The story of Chinna Dharapuram Pastorate

Early Christian Witness

Chinna Dharapuram Pastorate forms part of the Christian witness in the Karur region of Tamil Nadu. Its history is one of a network of villages and settlements in which Christian families gathered for worship, fellowship and mutual support. The growth of the congregation was closely connected with educational, social and community work in the surrounding area.

Medical and Educational Service

In 1927, a medical facility associated with the Wesleyan Mission was established in the locality to provide basic medical care. Dr. Annie P. Ammayar is remembered in connection with this service. The medical work offered support to local residents and formed part of the wider mission to serve the community.

In 1941, the Bethany Mission Vengadapuram school was established, providing educational opportunities for children from the surrounding villages. The school became an important part of the community’s development, and its educational contribution continued over the following decades.

Community Development and Vocational Training

In 1976, a Non-Formal Education Centre was developed with the support of KNH. Its activities included practical learning and vocational skills intended to strengthen the livelihoods of local families. Training and community programmes included tailoring, agricultural and household-based activities, and traditional spinning. These initiatives supported practical learning, self-reliance and opportunities for women and young people.

Vocational training was also associated with the Council for Technical and Vocational Training (CTVT). Through skills-based instruction and community support, the programmes helped residents to develop practical abilities and pursue livelihood opportunities. The church’s wider ministry included educational support, family welfare and activities intended to strengthen community life.

Congregational Life and Pastoral Ministry

The congregation’s life has been sustained through worship, pastoral care, fellowship and service to families across the area. The community continues to gather for worship and to take part in church activities, while successive ministers have contributed to the development of congregational life and local outreach.

A Continuing Commitment to Service

The history of Chinna Dharapuram Pastorate reflects a continuing commitment to Christian worship, education, health-related service and community development. Through the combined efforts of its congregation, ministers and community workers, the pastorate continues to nurture faith, encourage fellowship and contribute to the well-being of the people it serves.
