The story of St. Luke’s Church

St. Luke’s Church, associated with Bishop Heber College (BHC), Tiruchirappalli, reflects a ministry shaped by Christian fellowship, pastoral care and service to the surrounding community. Its history follows the congregation from the 1990s onwards, through the dedication of places of worship, the service of successive clergy and the continuing efforts of church members to nurture a welcoming Christian community.

The Beginnings of the Congregation

The congregation’s early development dates from the late 1990s, in the Valanur Road area near Bishop Heber College. Christian families and members of the community gathered for worship and fellowship, and the congregation gradually took on a more organised life. Church leaders and clergy helped to bring families together and supported the establishment of a regular place of worship.

A Place for Worship and Fellowship

A worshipping community was established, and church activities grew through the participation of local families. Pastoral visits, prayer and shared fellowship helped to strengthen the congregation. In 1996 there was a programme or initiative to support the community’s Christian life, followed by further organisational developments in the years after.

Leaders of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese were involved in this work, and clergy ministered to the congregation. Their service helped to lay a foundation for worship, pastoral care and Christian formation.

Developing the Ministry

A significant development came in 2000, associated with the ministry of Rev. C. David Iyer. Rev. James Sevarajan and other church leaders also supported the congregation’s growth. In 2001 church members continued to strengthen the worshipping community, and further ministry and organisational work followed between 2001 and 2003.

From 2003, successive pastors served the congregation. Their ministries reflect the continuing care and leadership offered to it over the years.

Pastoral Leadership Across the Years

Pastoral service continued from 2013 onwards, as successive clergy cared for the congregation.

A Continuing Witness of Faith

St. Luke’s Church, BHC, stands as a witness to the faith and commitment of the people who have gathered for worship, supported one another and sustained the congregation through changing times. Its story honours the clergy, church officers, families and supporters whose service has helped to nurture Christian fellowship.

With gratitude for its history and hope for the future, St. Luke’s Church continues its calling to be a place of prayer, spiritual growth and compassionate service, sharing the love of Christ with the college community and the wider neighbourhood.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
