The story of Holy Thomas Church
Holy Thomas Church serves the Christian community of Karathai Nagar, Viralimalai, and carries a story of faith, perseverance and renewal. The congregation took shape through the commitment of local families, and over time the church grew from a modest place of worship into a more established spiritual home. Its journey reflects the lasting value of prayer, fellowship and shared responsibility.
The Beginnings of the Congregation
The congregation’s story began in the 1970s, when Christian families in the area sought pastoral support and a place to gather for worship. Villagers travelled to attend services and receive spiritual care, and a local Christian community gradually took shape. The early years were marked by the determination of families to sustain their faith and to establish a regular place of worship close to home.
Establishing a Place of Worship
On 1 February 1987, an important milestone, a church building was established for the congregation. It served as a centre for worship and fellowship, providing a shared spiritual home for the growing community.
On 1 April 1987, the congregation’s worshipping life became established in a more settled form. This was a significant step in the church’s development and in the strengthening of Christian fellowship in Karathai Nagar.
A New Chapter of Growth
As the congregation grew, the existing building and facilities became increasingly inadequate for the needs of its worshippers. The church community grew to about 80 families, and in response the congregation worked towards a larger and more suitable place of worship.
With support and collective effort, a new church building with a metal-sheet roof was constructed. The building project, including a reinforced-concrete roof and associated facilities, cost about ₹1 crore. These developments reflect the congregation’s commitment to creating a safe and lasting space for worship and fellowship.
Dedication of the Renewed Church
A major milestone was reached on 10 February 2022, when the new church building was dedicated. The reinforced-concrete roof was completed or fitted on 23 February 2022. This renewal represents the faith, generosity and perseverance of the congregation and its desire to provide a more welcoming place for worship.
The renovated church stands as a testimony to what a community can achieve through prayer, unity and shared commitment. It offers a renewed setting for worship, spiritual growth and fellowship among the families of Karathai Nagar.
A Living Community of Faith
Holy Thomas Church continues to be a place where people gather to worship God, encourage one another and nurture Christian faith across generations. Its history honours the local families who sustained the congregation, the leaders who guided its development and all who contributed to the building and renewal of the church.
With gratitude for the past and hope for the future, the congregation looks ahead in faith. May Holy Thomas Church continue to be a beacon of Christ’s love in Karathai Nagar, welcoming worshippers and serving the community with humility, unity and compassion.
“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain.”
