The story of Immanuel Church

“The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.” — Psalm 145:9

Immanuel Church, Udumalpet, is part of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. Its history is closely linked with the development of Christian missionary work in the Udumalpet region and the growth of the Methodist presence in the surrounding communities. The wider missionary movement in the area brought together evangelistic work, education and pastoral ministry, laying the foundations for an enduring Christian congregation in the town.

Historical Overview

Missionary workers arrived in the region in the late nineteenth century. Its missionary history includes the ministry of the American missionary Rev. W. A. Sandford and the work of Rev. W. J. Noble, whose publication ‘Ploughing the Rock’ records aspects of that history. The year 1923 was an important one in the establishment of organised Methodist missionary work in Udumalpet.

The beginnings of Immanuel Church are associated with the growth of a Christian community in the town in the early twentieth century. The congregation was organised in 1923, with about 130 families, and a Methodist church building was later constructed in 1926. These developments provided a settled centre for worship, fellowship and the nurture of Christian faith among local families.

The church continued to develop through the ministry of successive missionaries, pastors and church workers. In 1961, during the episcopacy of Rt. Rev. E. B. Thorp, the church building was expanded. Sunday School ministry began in 1967, strengthening Christian instruction for children and young people and contributing to the life of the congregation across the generations.

The earlier church building was completely demolished, and a new church was built in its place. The new building was dedicated on 15 August 1991 by Rt. Rev. Dr. R. Paulraj. This marked a significant milestone in the life of Immanuel Church and provided a renewed place for worship and congregational activities.

Church leaders and ministers associated with the development of the congregation included Rt. Rev. E. B. Thorp, Rev. G. S. William, Rev. L. G. Gray, Rev. J. O. Mount Ford, Rev. Gnananamuthu and Rev. Devasagayam. Their ministries, together with the commitment of local families and church members, helped to sustain the congregation’s spiritual life and its service to the community.

Further growth in congregational life is reflected in the development of worshipping communities and the continuing participation of families. At one phase of the church’s development there were 109 families, and later a congregation of 94 families. A wider pattern of church activities, fellowship and pastoral care has supported the congregation over the years.

Continuing Witness

Today, CSI Immanuel Church, Udumalpet, continues its ministry through worship, Sunday School, Christian nurture, pastoral care and fellowship. With gratitude for its missionary foundations and the generations who have sustained its life, the church remains committed to nurturing faith and serving the people of Udumalpet.

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
Acts 2:42
