The history

The story of Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School

Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School, Puthur, is one of the historic educational institutions of Tiruchirappalli. Established with an emphasis on education and service to the community, the school has grown through successive stages while continuing its educational mission under the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese.

Historical Development

The school began as a branch of the school at Teppakulam and functioned under the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG). It remained a middle school until 1906. In 1907, two more classes were introduced, a further stage in its growth. After later educational developments and recommendations, the institution was upgraded, and in 1934 it began to function as an independent high school.

After the formation of the Church of South India and of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, the school came under the administration of the Diocese. In 1979, it was upgraded to a Higher Secondary School. It now provides education from Standard I to Standard XII, in 37 sections.

The historic structure has been renovated and restored over the years, including in 1991 and again in 2008. It continues to serve the school community and is used for the daily prayers of the teachers.
