The story of Bishop’s College of Nursing
A Nursing Education Initiative Rooted in Service
Bishop’s College of Nursing, Dharapuram, was established in 1993 with a commitment to improving access to healthcare and strengthening the quality of life of people in rural communities. Its beginnings were guided by a vision of service, with particular concern for rural women and families who had limited access to healthcare. The institution developed as an expression of the Christian mission’s commitment to compassionate care, community welfare and the education of skilled nursing professionals.
The Vision and Mission of Service
The institution’s guiding principle is “We have come to serve, not to be served.” This spirit of service has shaped its approach to nursing education and community engagement. The college has sought not only to prepare students for professional nursing practice but also to cultivate a commitment to serving people in rural and underserved areas.
Growth of Nursing Programmes
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc. Nursing) programme began in 1993. In response to the growing need for advanced nursing education, the Master of Science in Nursing (M.Sc. Nursing) programme was introduced in 2006. These programmes marked important stages in the institution’s development and in its contribution to nursing education.
Academic Recognition and Affiliation
The institution has been associated with the relevant nursing education and regulatory bodies, including the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council, Chennai, and the Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi, and has been affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. These links form part of the framework for its nursing education programmes.
Community Healthcare and Rural Outreach
Community service is an important dimension of the college’s mission. The college has provided healthcare services and outreach for rural communities, including support for people with limited access to medical care. Its service activities extended across nearby villages and contributed to community health awareness and care. This practical orientation connects classroom learning with the healthcare needs of the wider community.
Institutional Development and Student Strength
The college continued its academic work in its undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programmes. In 2022, 190 students were enrolled in B.Sc. Nursing and eight in M.Sc. Nursing.
A Continuing Commitment to Compassionate Care
Since its establishment in 1993, Bishop’s College of Nursing has sought to combine professional nursing education with a sustained commitment to rural healthcare and social responsibility. Its history reflects the belief that nursing is both a profession and a vocation of service, one that brings skilled care, dignity and compassion to individuals, families and communities.
