CSI Good News Industrial Training Centre
Founded to provide practical, employment-oriented training.
The story of CSI Good News Industrial Training Centre
CSI Good News Industrial Training Centre was established in 1979 to provide practical, employment-oriented training for young people, particularly school dropouts and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Its early programmes included non-formal training in radio servicing and electrician skills.
Establishment and Vision
Professor Dr. D. Swamiraj served as the institution’s first Correspondent. Later the Diocese also introduced a printing press, broadening the institution’s vocational and technical work.
Growth of Technical and Vocational Training
In its early years, the Centre expanded its training to include electrician training, radio and television servicing, hand composing, printing and bookbinding. An industrial school stream was also introduced. Tailoring courses were later offered for women, widening access to skill development and livelihoods.
The Centre placed particular emphasis on school dropouts and people from economically weaker sections. Short, six-month training programmes were designed to give participants practical skills that could help them find employment in small-scale industries and companies. This approach reflected the institution’s commitment to sustainable livelihoods through vocational education.
Recognition and Course Development
During 1990–1991, the Electronics Mechanic course was introduced under the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) pattern, affiliated with the Directorate General of Employment and Training (DGET), Government of India. In 1999, affiliation was obtained for the Electrician course under the NCVT pattern.
The Electrician course continued under the NCVT pattern, alongside non-formal courses in Tailoring and Typewriting. These programmes reflect the Centre’s continuing role in providing technical and practical skills training.
The Diocesan Printing Press
The printing press associated with the Centre undertakes printing work for the Diocese, Bishop Heber College and other diocesan institutions. It has thus served the communication and institutional needs of the wider diocesan network.
A Continuing Commitment to Skill Development
CSI Good News Industrial Training Centre represents the Diocese’s commitment to making vocational education accessible and relevant to the needs of the community. From its beginnings in non-formal electrician and radio servicing courses to NCVT-pattern technical training and livelihood-oriented programmes, the Centre has sought to equip learners with practical skills for employment and self-reliance.
Through its technical and non-formal training, the Centre continues its mission of education, inclusion and opportunity, particularly for those who benefit most from accessible, skill-based learning.
