The story of CSI Boys Higher Secondary School
A Legacy of Christian Education and Social Commitment in Karur
The educational mission of CSI Boys Higher Secondary School, Karur, is rooted in a wider history of Christian missionary service in the Karur region. An important figure in this history was Rev. Henry Little (1826–1893), who took charge of the Karur Mission in 1874. His work reached beyond pastoral ministry to education, child welfare, vocational training, healthcare and community development. He believed that education could restore dignity, widen opportunities and bring lasting social change, particularly among communities with limited access to formal learning.
Rev. Henry Little and the Karur Children’s Home
During the famine of 1877, Rev. Henry Little served as Chairman of the Karur Relief Committee and organised help for people affected by the crisis. Recognising the plight of children who had been orphaned or abandoned, he established the Karur Children’s Home on 11 September 1877. The Home gave children food, shelter, clothing, education, medical care, vocational preparation and spiritual nurture. Between 1877 and 1879, it cared for 244 children.
The Children’s Home welcomed children from different social communities and sought to give them an environment in which they could live and learn together. Alongside formal education, the children received practical training in crafts and livelihoods, including carpentry, blacksmithing, weaving, embroidery, agriculture and gardening. The initiative later developed into the Karur Industrial School, extending the mission’s emphasis on education, practical skills and economic self-reliance.
The Establishment of CSI Boys Higher Secondary School
CSI Boys Higher Secondary School, Karur, was established on 21 July 1971. Managed by the Church of South India (CSI) Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, it carries forward the wider Christian commitment to make learning accessible and meaningful for children from diverse social and economic backgrounds. The school became a Higher Secondary School on 21 July 1981, extending its provision to the higher secondary level.
The school’s own establishment in 1971 is distinct from the nineteenth-century missionary initiatives of Rev. Henry Little. The earlier mission forms part of the broader history of Christian education and social service in Karur; the present school is a later institutional development under the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese.
Vision, Motto and Educational Philosophy
Guided by the motto “Learn, Live, Lead”, the school seeks to provide holistic, value-based education that nurtures intellectual development, moral character, discipline, compassion, leadership and social responsibility. Its educational approach gives importance to the overall development of each student and to preparing young people to take a responsible part in society.
Inclusive Education and Service to the Community
The school has a particular commitment to children from economically and socially disadvantaged families. Its educational mission extends beyond academic instruction to care, encouragement and support for students who need additional help. The school enrolled 39 children with special needs and supported them through special education assistance. Its teachers also contribute voluntarily to student welfare, including support for the nutritional needs of deserving learners.
Institutional Profile
The school provides education from Standard VI to Standard XII in Tamil and English medium sections, following the Tamil Nadu State Board curriculum. In 2026, it had 600 students and a staff of 34: 27 teaching and seven non-teaching. Its library held about 5,120 books, and the campus had playground facilities.
Continuing the Mission Through Education
For more than five decades, CSI Boys Higher Secondary School, Karur, has served the educational needs of young people in the region. Its story connects a long tradition of Christian missionary engagement in Karur with the continuing educational ministry of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. Through accessible education, inclusive practices and an emphasis on character and service, the school continues its commitment to helping students learn with confidence, live with integrity and lead with compassion.
