The history

The story of CSI Girls Higher Secondary School

A Mission of Compassion During the Famine

The origins of CSI Girls Higher Secondary School, Karur, are closely associated with the famine that affected South India between 1874 and 1877. The famine caused widespread hardship, and many children were left without parental care. Karur was then a small town, and the surrounding rural communities were severely affected. In response to this distress, the Methodist missionary Rev. Henry Whittle took orphaned and vulnerable children into his care, giving them shelter and support.

From Child Care to Education and Skill Development

As the number of children in his care grew, Rev. Henry Whittle established a separate home where they could receive food, care and basic vocational instruction. In 1877, the mission’s work expanded to include vocational training and an elementary school for both boys and girls. Over time, separate schools were established for boys and girls, carrying the mission’s commitment from relief and protection to sustained education.

The Development of the Girls’ School

The present CSI Girls Higher Secondary School, on North Pradakshanam Road in Karur, is part of this continuing educational endeavour. Its development reflects the growth of an initiative that began with the care of children affected by famine and gradually became a structured educational institution for girls.

Institutional Growth

The school developed in stages. The primary school was established in 1930, the middle school in 1942, the high school in 1982 and the higher secondary school in 1999.

A Continuing Commitment to Education

The story of CSI Girls Higher Secondary School, Karur, is rooted in a response to human suffering. What began as care for children orphaned in a time of famine developed into an educational mission that sought to provide learning, practical skills and opportunities for girls. The institution continues to represent the enduring commitment to education and social service of the Christian mission in the Karur region and the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese.
