The history

The story of CSI Higher Secondary School

CSI Higher Secondary School, Ariyalur, is an educational institution administered by the Church of South India, Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. Its origins lie in the missionary commitment to Christian education and, in particular, to providing educational opportunities for girls in the Ariyalur region.

Missionary Beginnings and the Education of Girls

The school’s beginnings go back to the missionary work of Rev. Arthur, who came to the Ariyalur region to promote Christian education. In 1879, he established a school specifically for girls, an important commitment to widening educational access for young women at a time when their opportunities for formal education were limited.

The school first functioned in a rented building on Varanasi Street. In 1900, the present site was purchased by Mr. S. A. Gabriel, Advocate, and an SPG school was established there, continuing the educational work in Ariyalur.

Institutional Development

The institution progressed through several stages of educational development. It functioned as a Middle School from 1 June 1945, was upgraded to a High School in 1983 and attained Higher Secondary School status in 1996.

In its earlier years, the school functioned under the administration of the local church. Teachers began receiving salaries after 1947. The institution faced financial difficulties at different times, and the school’s future was threatened when its income was not enough to meet its expenses.

Commitment and Sacrifice for the School

Mr. S. A. Gabriel played a significant role in sustaining the institution through its financially difficult years. He took the initiative to mobilise resources, travelled to different places to raise funds and collected donations so that the school could keep functioning. His commitment and personal efforts helped preserve the educational service of the institution.

The school’s development also reflects the contribution of church leaders, teachers and members of the local community who worked to strengthen its educational activities and infrastructure.

Continuing Educational Service

Today, CSI Higher Secondary School continues its educational mission in Ariyalur under the administration of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese.

From its beginnings as a school established for girls in 1879 to its present status as a Higher Secondary School, the institution represents a continuing commitment to education, opportunity and service. Its journey reflects the dedication of missionaries, church leaders, educators and benefactors who worked to make education accessible to the community.

Through its continuing educational ministry, the school seeks to nurture learners with knowledge, values and a sense of responsibility, upholding the Diocese’s commitment to education as a means of personal and social development.
