The history

The story of St. John’s Higher Secondary School

St. John’s Higher Secondary School, Irungalur, is an educational institution administered by the Church of South India, Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. Its history is closely connected with the missionary presence in the Irungalur region and with the development of Christian education, healthcare and community service.

Missionary Beginnings and the Growth of Education

The beginnings of Christian mission in the region are associated with the arrival of the missionary Rev. Christian Samuel John Kollhoff around 1840. His work contributed to the development of Christian outreach, medical care and primary education in the area. The educational work gradually developed into a school serving the children of the local community.

Upgradation to High School

An important milestone in the school’s development came on 1 July 1948, during the episcopate of Bishop Bentley Thorp, when the institution was upgraded to a high school through the efforts of Rev. Jel Rajaiya, who served as Headmaster. This was a significant step in widening access to secondary education for children in and around Irungalur.

Development of the Campus and Educational Facilities

The school continued to develop under the leadership of successive Correspondents and Headmasters. Rev. D. Somakandharam contributed to the development of the school buildings and infrastructure by mobilising financial support. Later improvements to the campus, including additional facilities and compound walls, were undertaken through the efforts of later school administrators and leaders.

The institution’s development also included hostel facilities for boys and girls, supported through KNH assistance. These facilities helped extend educational opportunities to children who needed residential support to continue their studies.

Growth and Continuing Educational Service

The school grew into an institution serving more than 600 students, supported by 21 teachers and five non-teaching staff. Its development reflects a sustained commitment to providing education and a supportive environment for children from the surrounding communities.

The institution continues to uphold the educational vision of the Diocese by combining academic learning with care, discipline and opportunities for the holistic development of its students.

A Continuing Mission

From its beginnings in the missionary and educational work of the nineteenth century to its present role as a Higher Secondary School, St. John’s Higher Secondary School, Irungalur, represents the continuing commitment of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese to education and community service. It remains dedicated to nurturing young people through accessible education and preparing them to contribute responsibly to society.
