The story of CSI Middle School
Methodist Missionary Beginnings
The history of the school is connected with the Methodist missionary movement in Nagapattinam. On 28 January 1817, the Methodist missionaries Rev. James Lynch and Rev. Thomas Squance arrived at Nagapattinam from Ceylon, marking the beginning of Methodist missionary work in the region. Their ministry, and that of their fellow workers, contributed to the establishment of churches and schools, extending Christian education to the local community.
Establishment of the School
In 1823, an educational institution known as the Anglo-Vernacular School was established in Nagapattinam. It began with six students and gave instruction in both English and Tamil. The initiative sought to make education accessible while enabling learners to gain knowledge in both languages.
The school’s establishment formed part of the wider educational outreach of the Methodist mission. It reflected a commitment to education as a means of learning, personal development and community advancement.
Growth and Development
The institution continued to develop over the years and was upgraded to a Middle School in 1979. Its growth reflects the continuing demand for education and the efforts of successive generations of teachers and administrators. The school had 1,384 students enrolled.
Leadership and Institutional Service
The school’s development has been sustained by the commitment of its educators, its administrators and the wider church community, who have contributed to its educational mission over the years.
A Continuing Educational Mission
From its beginnings as an Anglo-Vernacular School in 1823 to its present role as a Middle School, CSI Middle School, Nagapattinam, represents a long-standing commitment to education in the region. Its history is part of the wider Methodist educational legacy that continues through the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese.
The institution remains part of the Diocese’s mission to make education accessible and to nurture learners through knowledge, values and service to the community.
