The history

The story of SPG Middle School

SPG Middle School, Thuraiyur, traces its origins to 1884, when missionaries of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) established the school to provide educational opportunities for children in the town. The institution was an early expression of the Christian mission’s commitment to education and community development in the Thuraiyur region.

Missionary Beginnings and Educational Vision

Over the generations, the school has contributed to the education of children who have gone on to serve in many fields, including medicine, law, engineering, government service, business and social service. Its educational work has been sustained by generations of teachers and staff who have served the institution.

Institutional Development

The school went through successive stages of development. It was upgraded to a Middle School in 1979, and further developments followed with public support in 1989. From 1 June 1995, the school continued its educational work as a Middle School in response to the needs and requests of parents.

Educational Contribution and Community Service

The school has served generations of learners in and around Thuraiyur. Its former students have pursued careers in professional, administrative, commercial and community-oriented fields, reflecting the institution’s contribution to the wider society.

The school also remembers the contribution of former Headmasters Mr. P. Samuel, Mr. J. Thangakannu and Mr. A. R. L. Thiagarajar, who received the State Best Teacher Award in recognition of their service to education.

A Continuing Educational Mission

With about 350 students, the school continues its educational service in Thuraiyur. Its journey from an SPG missionary initiative in 1884 to its present role as a Middle School reflects the enduring commitment of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese to accessible education.

Through the dedication of its teachers, the support of the community and the legacy of generations of learners, SPG Middle School continues to uphold its mission of education, service and the development of young people.
