The story of Anaimudi Pastorate
Historical Beginnings
The Christian witness in the Anamalai region has developed through the missionary outreach and congregational life of the Church in its hill and estate communities. The Anaimudi congregation was part of the wider Moolanur Pastorate before it began to function independently. In 1995, Anaimudi was separated from the parent Moolanur Pastorate and organised as a distinct pastorate. The new pastorate was inaugurated by Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Paulraj, an important milestone in the development of the Church’s ministry in the region.
Congregational Development
The CSI Anaimudi Pastorate developed into a fellowship of seven congregations and worshipping communities. These include CSI Sarva Vallavar Church, Solaiyar; CSI Diamond Jubilee Church, Thaymudi NC; CSI Nambikkai Church, Thaymudi LD; CSI Nambikkai Church, Thaymudi MD; and CSI Samadhana Church, Anaimudi. Worship services are also held in the Nallamudi and Vayparast estate communities, where the congregations gather for prayer and fellowship.
Rev. Daya Nidhi Velli served as the first pastor from the beginning of the pastorate. The ministry was strengthened through the work of successive church leaders and the participation of members across the congregations. Their commitment helped to establish and sustain Christian worship and fellowship in the scattered hill and estate settlements.
The Church in the Estate Communities
The pastorate serves people living in the estate settlements and neighbouring areas of the Anamalai region. There is also an indigenous community in the Udumbarai area. Three families from this community are members of the Anaimudi congregation, reflecting the Church’s presence among the diverse communities of the region.
There was also an earlier pastoral visit to the Anaimudi estate area. Rev. Henry Edwin Bleby, who came to Valparai and stayed there to undertake ministry, administered the first recorded baptism on 7 June 1925, to Devaraj, the three-month-old son of Mr. S. Solomon and Mrs. Grace. This event is part of the early history of Christian ministry in the area, before Anaimudi became an independent pastorate.
Continuing the Mission
The CSI Anaimudi Pastorate continues its ministry among the congregations and estate communities of the Anamalai region through worship, pastoral care, prayer and fellowship. Its journey from the wider Moolanur Pastorate to an independent pastorate in 1995 reflects the growth of a faith community sustained by the commitment of its ministers and members. The pastorate remains part of the wider mission of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese.
