Who serves here
The story of Karamalai Pastorate
The CSI Karamalai Pastorate is situated in the Anamalai hill region and serves Christian communities living across its hill settlements. The area is characterised by its natural landscape, grass-covered hills, and the streams and waterfalls that are important to the surrounding communities. The pastorate developed from an earlier combined congregational area that included Nadumalai, before being organised as a separate ecclesiastical unit.
Historical Background
The Christian community in Karamalai and the neighbouring settlements has grown through the contribution of families who came from different parts of Tamil Nadu, including the southern districts and the Erode region. Their settlement and shared faith have shaped the distinctive character of the pastorate and its congregational life.
Congregations and Places of Worship
The pastorate comprises four church congregations serving the hill communities: Holy Immanuel Church at Karamalai, Holy Thomas Church at Oorimalai, Holy Paul Church at Akkamalai and St. Andrew’s Church at Vellamalai. Together, these congregations provide centres for worship, prayer, fellowship and pastoral care across the region.
Christian ministry in Karamalai developed from the 1940s, with the contribution of church workers and ministers who served the people in the hill settlements. Over the years, the congregations have continued to grow and to strengthen their common life through worship and fellowship.
Growth and Continuing Ministry
The pastorate serves a geographically extensive area, with settlements spread across approximately 50 kilometres. Its ministry has involved reaching families in remote locations and sustaining regular worship and pastoral contact across the hill communities. The growth of the congregations has also called for the improvement and renovation of places of worship to meet the needs of the members.
The CSI Karamalai Pastorate continues its ministry through the commitment of its congregations, church workers and members. The pastorate remains part of the Anamalai region of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, serving its communities through worship, pastoral care, fellowship and Christian witness.
A Continuing Heritage
Rooted in the faith and perseverance of generations of Christian families in the Anamalai hills, the CSI Karamalai Pastorate continues to nurture its congregations and sustain the Church’s witness in the region. Its four churches remain places of spiritual fellowship and community, carrying forward a shared heritage of faith and service.
