The story of Avinasipalayam Pastorate
The Name and Early Christian Witness
Avinasipalayam is a village in the Dharapuram region of Tamil Nadu. Its name is associated with the idea of receiving God’s blessing. Christian witness in the area developed within the wider missionary and congregational work carried out in the region, and the contribution of Bishop Rt. Rev. Edgar Bentley Thorp to the development of Christian education and healthcare in the wider area is remembered.
Formation of the Congregation
Avinasipalayam was described as a comparatively underdeveloped village within the Dharapuram region. As Christian ministry expanded in the surrounding area, the congregation at Avinasipalayam developed as a local centre for worship, Christian teaching and fellowship. The date 22 July 1960 marks an important milestone in the organisation of the congregation, and Rev. F. Thomas was its first appointed pastor.
Worship and Christian Education
The congregation’s ministry included regular worship and Christian instruction, in two sections of congregational activity: worship and Sunday School. These gave families and children the opportunity to take part in church life and to grow in Christian faith. The congregation also served people from nearby settlements who came together for worship and fellowship.
Church Facilities and Recent Developments
The congregation continued to develop its facilities to support worship and community life. A church-building milestone came on 4 November 2011. On 18 June 2022, a new church building was constructed and dedicated, followed by another church-related development on 29 January 2023. These milestones reflect the congregation’s continuing efforts to provide suitable facilities for worship and ministry.
Pastoral Leadership and Community Life
The history of the pastorate reflects the service of ministers, church workers and local families who have supported worship, Christian education and congregational fellowship. Several clergy and lay contributors are associated with the church’s development, and their service has helped to sustain the congregation and its ministry in Avinasipalayam and the surrounding villages.
A Continuing Witness of Faith
From its development as a local congregation to the continued improvement of its worship facilities, CSI Avinasipalayam Pastorate reflects the faith and commitment of its members. Through worship, Sunday School, pastoral care and fellowship, the pastorate continues its Christian witness in the community.
“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.”
