The story of Ellis Memorial Church

“My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” — Isaiah 56:7

CSI Ellis Memorial Church, Dharapuram, is an established Christian witness in the Dharapuram region. Its history is associated with the evangelistic and pastoral ministry of Rev. J. J. Ellis, whose work helped to nurture Christian faith and community life in the area.

Historical Overview

Rev. J. J. Ellis served in the region from 1913, ministering among local communities and encouraging people in the Christian faith. The church’s foundation is dated to 28 March 1931, when the congregation was organised under his ministry. The church became a place of worship and fellowship for Christians in Dharapuram and the surrounding area.

In its early years, worship and congregational life developed under modest circumstances. Over time, the congregation worked towards a more permanent place of worship. The church’s development reflects the commitment of its members, who sustained its ministry and contributed to the growth of Christian witness in the region.

The church has continued to serve as a centre for worship, prayer, fellowship and spiritual nurture. Its history also reflects the wider contribution of local congregations to the life of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, through their witness, service and continuing commitment to the Gospel.

The congregation marked the 75th anniversary of the church’s establishment, celebrating its heritage and giving thanks for the generations of worshippers who have sustained its life and ministry. The anniversary was an occasion to remember the church’s beginnings and to renew its commitment to serve the community faithfully.

Continuing Witness

CSI Ellis Memorial Church remains a reminder of the enduring work of Christian mission in Dharapuram. With gratitude for those who laid its foundations and for the generations who have worshipped here, the congregation continues its journey of faith, fellowship and service.

“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.”
