The story of Dharapuram–Central Pastorate

“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” — Psalm 126:3

The CSI Dharapuram–Central Pastorate has its roots in the early growth of the Methodist missionary movement in the Dharapuram region. The congregation is one of the earliest centres of Christian witness in the area, with its beginnings in the ministry of Rev. J. J. Ellis from 1913 to 1933.

Historical Background

Under the leadership of Rev. J. J. Ellis, Christian ministry took root among local communities and gradually developed into an organised congregational life. The work was sustained through worship, pastoral care and the building of relationships with families in the surrounding villages.

The pastorate came to include a number of congregations and worshipping communities in and around Dharapuram. These local congregations contributed to the spread of the Christian faith and provided places for prayer, fellowship and spiritual nurture. The growth of the pastorate reflects the commitment of successive generations of church members, ministers and lay leaders.

The ministry also engaged with the everyday concerns of local people. Congregational life included pastoral support, the encouragement of children and young people, and the nurturing of Christian values within families and the wider community. Through these efforts, the church became part of the social and spiritual life of the region.

Over the years, the congregation and its associated churches have continued to uphold their Christian witness through worship, fellowship and service. Their history stands as a testimony to the dedication of those who established and sustained the work, and to the continuing place of the pastorate within the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese.

Continuing Mission

Today, the CSI Dharapuram–Central Pastorate continues the legacy of the early missionary and congregational work in the region. With gratitude for its heritage, the pastorate remains committed to proclaiming the Gospel, strengthening fellowship among its congregations and serving people with compassion and faithfulness.

“Let all that you do be done in love.”
