The story of Uthiyur Church
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” — Psalm 23:1
Uthiyur Church is one of the significant congregations in the Dharapuram region of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. Its history is closely connected with the development of Christian mission among the rural communities of this area. The congregation was earlier known as the Uthiyur Circuit and grew through the missionary and pastoral efforts of successive church workers and local believers.
Historical Overview
In its early years, the mission served families across the surrounding villages. A Sunday School formed an important part of the congregation’s work, helping children and young people to become familiar with Christian teaching and worship. The church’s ministry gradually extended to neighbouring settlements, and a network of village congregations developed around Uthiyur.
The congregation’s work has included evangelism, pastoral visitation, Christian education and fellowship. A primary school and a kindergarten have also served the locality, reflecting the church’s commitment to children’s learning and development alongside its spiritual ministry. These educational initiatives have contributed to the wider life of the rural communities.
The Uthiyur congregation became distinct from its mother congregation at Thayampalayam. Over time, the work expanded to include 11 village congregations. The continuing involvement of local families, women’s groups, youth and church workers has helped to sustain worship and community life across the pastorate.
Between 2019 and 2022, new church buildings were established in several surrounding villages, including Palayam, Valavanallur, Sirukinathur and Amaravathipalayam. These developments strengthened the church’s presence in the area and gave congregations dedicated spaces for worship and fellowship.
The pastorate’s journey reflects the contribution of generations of missionaries, pastors, evangelists, teachers and local believers. Their service has nurtured Christian faith and helped the church to remain an important centre of spiritual life and community fellowship in the Uthiyur region.
Continuing Witness
Today, the CSI Uthiyur Pastorate continues its ministry through worship, Sunday School, Christian education, pastoral care and fellowship among its village congregations. With gratitude for those who established and strengthened the work, the pastorate remains committed to nurturing faith and serving the communities entrusted to its care.
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”
