The story of Vellakoil Pastorate
“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” — Psalm 126:3
The CSI Vellakoil Pastorate has a long history of Christian witness in the Vellakoil region of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. The congregation’s beginnings are traced to 27 June 1927, when a Christian gathering was held at 11.00 a.m. under the missionary ministry of Rev. J. J. Ellis. This gathering marked an important stage in the establishment of an organised Christian community in Vellakoil and its surrounding villages.
Historical Background
The early congregation grew through the commitment of local Christian families and the work of missionaries, pastors and church workers. Land was purchased for the congregation, and its church life developed after that. As the Christian community expanded, Vellakoil became a centre of worship and fellowship for believers from the surrounding rural settlements.
The pastorate’s ministry developed across a wide area, bringing together Christians from numerous villages. The congregation was strengthened through regular worship, pastoral care, Christian instruction and the involvement of local leaders. The church also remembers the contribution of the women who served in its ministry, and of the catechists, teachers, office-bearers and other lay workers who supported congregational life.
The Christian community grew in membership and ministry. By 1970, the congregation had grown to approximately 750 members. The continuing service of successive pastors and church workers helped to sustain the church’s spiritual life and extend its ministry among the surrounding communities.
An important contribution to the wider community was the establishment of a student hostel through the efforts of Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Solomon Doraisawmy. This initiative supported students and formed part of the church’s concern for education and the well-being of younger generations. The hostel stands as a significant expression of the pastorate’s wider social and educational commitment.
Across the decades, the CSI Vellakoil Pastorate has been sustained by the faith and service of its members, ministers and lay leaders. Their collective efforts have helped to preserve Christian fellowship, nurture successive generations and maintain the church’s witness in Vellakoil and neighbouring villages.
Continuing Witness
Today, the CSI Vellakoil Pastorate continues its ministry through worship, pastoral care, Christian education and fellowship. With gratitude for its early missionaries and generations of faithful members, the pastorate remains committed to serving its congregations and sharing the love of Christ in the wider community.
“Let all that you do be done in love.”
