The story of Thanthonimalai Church
Early Missionary Outreach
The Christian witness at Thanthonimalai developed through missionary outreach and the work of local believers in the Karur region. Rev. W. White came to the area in 1970 to undertake evangelistic work. This early outreach helped to lay the foundations for the growth of a Christian congregation and for continued pastoral ministry among families in Thanthonimalai and neighbouring settlements.
Formation and Growth of the Congregation
The congregation developed through the participation of local Christian families and the service of successive ministers and church workers. The date 7 October 1985 marks an important milestone in the establishment of the Thanthonimalai congregation. In 1986, work began on a permanent place of worship on a site of five cents. The congregation continued to grow through worship, fellowship and pastoral care.
Church Development and Facilities
Over the following decades, the congregation continued to improve its facilities to support worship and ministry. The church’s status and facilities developed during the 1990s and early 2000s, followed by further work on ministry buildings. These improvements were made possible through the involvement of church members, local supporters and the wider diocesan community.
Sunday School and Children’s Ministry
Sunday School and Christian education have been important parts of the pastorate’s ministry. A Sunday School building was constructed in 2011, and facilities were developed further in the years that followed. These efforts provided space for children’s Bible teaching and helped to strengthen the congregation’s ministry across generations.
Pastoral Ministry and Community Life
The congregation’s history reflects the service of ministers, women workers, church members and local families who contributed to worship, pastoral care and community fellowship. Several clergy served in Thanthonimalai, and the church remains involved in the spiritual and social life of the surrounding community.
A Continuing Witness of Faith
From its early missionary beginnings to the growth of an established congregation, CSI Thanthonimalai Pastorate reflects the faith and commitment of generations of worshippers and church workers. Through worship, Christian education, pastoral care and fellowship, the pastorate continues its Christian witness in Thanthonimalai and the surrounding area.
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship.”
