The story of St. George Church

CSI St. George Church, Ariyalur, is part of the Christian heritage of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. Its story reflects the growth of Christian witness in the region through missionary service, congregational commitment, worship and the development of facilities for the church and community.

Early Missionary Work

The beginnings of Christian ministry in Ariyalur go back to the late nineteenth century, with missionary activity in the region from 1877. The work gradually took root among local families and developed into an established congregation. The church’s continuing history reflects the efforts of clergy, church workers and members who sustained Christian worship and fellowship.

Church Building and Dedication

A significant milestone in the congregation’s history was the dedication of the church building on 9 November 1972, marked by a Holy Communion service. This represented an important stage in the development of the congregation and its place in the life of the local community.

Renewal and Development

Over the years, the church and its facilities have been developed and renewed to serve the needs of the congregation. Work related to renovation was carried out, and a further dedication took place on 28 December 2019, conducted by Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Chandrasekaran. These efforts reflect the congregation’s desire to preserve its heritage while maintaining a suitable place for worship and fellowship.

Continuing Faith and Community

Today, CSI St. George Church, Ariyalur, continues to serve as a place of prayer, worship and Christian fellowship. Its heritage honours the generations who nurtured the congregation and encourages present and future members to continue their witness through faith, service and care for the wider community.

“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.”
