The history

The story of St. Peter’s Church

CSI St. Peter’s Church, Irungalur, forms part of the historic Christian witness of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. The congregation’s story is closely linked with the growth of Protestant Christian mission in the region, the work of missionaries and clergy, and a long-standing emphasis on education and community life.

Early Missionary Presence

The beginnings of this ministry go back to the work of Rev. Christian Samuel John Kollhoff, who visited the Tiruchirappalli region around 1840 and came to Irungalur in 1842. His ministry helped to build relationships with local people and encouraged the growth of Christian teaching and fellowship. His commitment to education and the establishment of a Sunday School for children are also remembered.

Education and the Growth of the Mission

By 1845, educational work for children was being strengthened, including provision for girls’ education. In 1849, a separate school for girls was established. The work continued to develop as the wider Kollidam Mission expanded, with 24 congregations in 1853 and 36 by 1861. These developments show the growing reach of Christian mission and its connections with education and community service.

The Church Building

A church building was completed in the mid-nineteenth century and dedicated on 10 July by the Bishop of Madras. The building provided a settled place for worship as the congregation and the wider mission continued to grow.

Pastoral Ministry and Renewal

Across successive generations, the congregation has been served by clergy who continued its spiritual and community ministry. Among them were Rev. Jeyaraj in 1982, and Rev. Dr. J. Durairaj and Rev. C. Arulselvi in 2005. A further rededication of the church took place on 28 December 2019, conducted by Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Chandrasekaran.

Continuing Witness

Today, the Irungalur congregation continues the legacy of worship, Christian fellowship and service that has grown through generations. Its history honours the missionary and educational work of the past, while encouraging the congregation to carry forward its faith and service in the present.
