The story of St. Paul’s Church
CSI Pullampadi Pastorate is part of the Christian heritage of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. Its history reflects the growth of Protestant mission in the region, the development of St. Paul’s Church, the contribution of Christian education and the continuing service of the pastors and members of the congregation.
The Beginnings of St. Paul’s Church
St. Paul’s Church, Pullampadi, was established in 1871 and was associated with the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) Mission. The church became a centre for Christian worship and fellowship, serving the congregation and the surrounding community.
Church Facilities and Early Development
A baptismal font was brought from England in 1875 and installed in 1876, reflecting the care taken to develop the church’s worship facilities in its early years. A further church-related milestone is dated 21 November 1905, marking another stage in the congregation’s development.
Christian Education
Education became an important part of the mission’s work in Pullampadi. An SPG Mission School was active from 1853. The school continued to develop, and a school building was dedicated on 26 February 1897. This educational ministry contributed to the wider mission of serving children and families in the community.
Formation of the Pastorate and Pastoral Ministry
In 1992, Pullampadi was organised as a separate pastorate, bringing together several congregational and ministry centres. Rev. Paul Ramanujam was the first pastorate leader, with Mr. Peter Rajan as secretary and the late Mr. Moses as treasurer. Successive pastors and church workers have continued the work of worship, pastoral care and congregational development.
Renewal and Rededication
A further rededication service was held on 28 February 2020, associated with Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Chandrasekaran. This milestone reflects the congregation’s continuing commitment to maintaining its place of worship and renewing its shared life of faith.
Continuing Witness
Today, CSI Pullampadi Pastorate continues the legacy of Christian worship, education and community service. The congregation honours the missionaries, pastors, educators and local members whose commitment helped to sustain the Church through generations, and looks ahead with faith and hope.
“Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”
