The story of Pudukottai Village Pastorate

CSI Pudukottai Village Pastorate forms part of the Christian heritage of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. Its history reflects the growth of Protestant Christian mission in the region, the ministry of missionaries and local church leaders, and the development of congregations and educational work across the surrounding villages.

Early Missionary Work

Christian mission in the Pudukottai area goes back to the early nineteenth century. By the 1820s, missionary activity was reaching villages in the surrounding region, and organised congregational work gradually took shape. The mission’s growth was connected with wider work in Tiruchirappalli and neighbouring areas.

The Ministry of Rev. Christian Samuel John Kollhoff

Rev. Christian Samuel John Kollhoff is associated with the strengthening of Christian ministry in the area during the 1840s, and with Pudukottai and the development of congregational worship there. The mission continued to expand through the efforts of clergy, evangelists and local believers, with Christian teaching and fellowship reaching additional villages.

Education and Village Ministry

Education formed an important part of the mission’s work. There were schools and educational initiatives in Pudukottai and nearby villages, alongside the development of worship centres. Mission workers and local church leaders helped to sustain these activities, supporting both Christian formation and the wider educational needs of the community.

Growth of Congregations

Over time, the work based in Pudukottai extended into surrounding communities, and congregations and church centres developed in several nearby villages. These local churches became part of a wider network of worship and fellowship, reflecting the dedication of successive generations of pastors, evangelists, educators and congregation members.

Continuing Witness

Today, CSI Pudukottai Village Pastorate continues the legacy of Christian worship, education and community service. Its history honours the missionaries, pastors, evangelists, teachers and local congregations whose work helped to establish and sustain Christian life in the region.
