The story of Perambalur Pastorate
CSI Perambalur Pastorate is part of the historic Christian witness of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. Its history reflects the contribution of missionary societies, pastors, educators and local congregations who sustained Christian worship and education in Perambalur and the surrounding region.
Early Missionary Presence
Christian missionary activity in the wider region developed during the nineteenth century through the work of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) and other mission workers. The growth of the Perambalur congregation is connected with this wider mission network and with the missionaries and clergy who served local communities.
Growth of the Congregation
Over time, the congregation developed as a centre for worship, fellowship and community life. Its history refers to the work of the SPG Mission and to the service of several mission workers, including Rev. W. A. Sanford, C. T. Hartley, Arthur Bott, Rev. Richardson, C. C. Eastwood, William Lilly, H. J. Evans and J. O. Mount Ford. Their names are remembered as part of the missionary service in the region.
Education and Community Service
Education formed an important part of the Church’s mission. School activities developed, and a school milestone is dated 16 June 1941. These efforts reflect the contribution of Christian institutions to learning and community development in and around Perambalur.
Church Development and Dedication
The congregation’s history includes later stages of church development and dedication. A milestone dated 31 December 2003 is associated with Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. James Srinivasan. A further dedication service was held on 12 October 2008 in connection with Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. G. Paul Vasanthakumar, and a church-related dedication followed on 25 October 2010. These dates mark important stages in the congregation’s continuing worship and development.
Continuing Ministry
Today, CSI Perambalur Pastorate continues to serve through worship, Christian fellowship and community engagement. Its heritage honours the missionaries, pastors, educators and congregational members whose faith and service helped to nurture the Church in the region.
