The story of Mettuppatti Pastorate

CSI Mettuppatti Pastorate is part of the historic Christian witness of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. Its story reflects the gradual growth of Christian mission in the region, the dedication of successive pastors and congregations, and the development of places of worship, education and service over many generations.

Early Missionary Beginnings

Christian missionary activity in the wider region goes back to the nineteenth century, when mission workers travelled through communities including Tiruchirappalli and nearby areas. By the 1880s, the work at Mettuppatti was being strengthened through the service of clergy and the establishment of a more organised congregational life. There were developments in 1884, and a significant church-related milestone followed in April 1885.

Establishment and Growth of the Congregation

The congregation continued to develop during the late nineteenth century. A key milestone came in 1897, when the church became an established centre for worship and Christian fellowship. During the early twentieth century, pastoral ministry and educational work expanded. The period from 1902 to 1908 was part of this growth, and a school was dedicated on 7 June 1908, reflecting the close connection between the Church’s ministry and education.

Pastoral Ministry and Education

The pastorate was served by successive ministers who supported worship, Christian teaching and the development of local institutions. Bishop Rev. C. S. Paulraj ministered from 1920 to 1930, and Rev. David Chellappa served later, during the 1930s and 1960s. These periods formed part of the continuing development of the congregation and its educational and community work.

Church Renewal and Dedication

The church’s history includes several periods of renewal and rededication. A rededication associated with Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. R. Paulraj took place in 1982, and the church was developed further during the ministries of successive pastors. Further renovation and rededication followed in 2008–2009, with Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. G. Paul Vasanthakumar associated with the rededication. These efforts reflect the congregation’s continuing commitment to maintaining its place of worship.

Recent Milestones

On 23 December 2016, a major anniversary and church-development milestone was marked with the participation of Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. G. Paul Vasanthakumar. A service on 3 July 2022 was associated with Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Chandrasekaran. These occasions form part of the pastorate’s more recent history of worship, renewal and congregational fellowship.

Continuing Witness

Today, CSI Mettuppatti Pastorate continues its ministry through worship, fellowship and service. Its heritage honours the missionaries, pastors, educators and members who helped to nurture the congregation, and encourages present and future generations to carry forward its Christian witness with faith and hope.
