The story of Lalgudi Pastorate
The history of the Church of South India in Lalgudi reflects a long-standing commitment to Christian worship, education and community life. Since missionary work arrived in the nineteenth century, the congregation and its leaders have contributed to the growth of Christian faith and service in the area.
Beginnings of Missionary Work
The mission in Lalgudi was established in 1883. On 11 May 1883, the SPG Mission acquired a site associated with the work of Rev. Joseph Light Wyatt, and a place for Christian worship was afterwards developed. This early work laid the foundations for the growth of the congregation and its continuing presence in Lalgudi.
Education and Congregational Growth
In the early twentieth century, the mission’s work included educational initiatives. A girls’ school was in operation from 1902 to 1905. These efforts reflect the close relationship between Christian mission, education and service to local families.
Church Development and Dedication
The church and its facilities developed over the decades. A major dedication service took place on 29 September 1958, associated with Rev. E. A. Chelliah and Rev. Canon J. G. Kollipillai. A bell tower was built in 1976 through the efforts of the congregation and its leaders. Further renovation and development continued in later years.
Renewal and Later Milestones
The church went through further stages of renewal and dedication in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. A dedication service took place on 13 October 1999 in the presence of Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. James Srinivasan. A further milestone was marked on 14 October 2012, when a service associated with the congregation’s fiftieth anniversary was conducted by Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. G. Paul Vasanthakumar. Later ministry and memorial-related events followed, reflecting the congregation’s continuing commitment to preserving its heritage.
Continuing Ministry
Today, CSI Lalgudi Pastorate continues to serve through worship, fellowship and community engagement. Its history honours the missionaries, clergy, educators and congregation members whose dedication helped to establish and sustain Christian ministry in the area, and encourages future generations to carry this legacy forward.
“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.”
