The story of Jayankondam Pastorate

CSI Jayankondam Pastorate forms part of the Christian heritage of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. Its history reflects the growth of Christian communities in the region, the contributions of missionaries and church leaders, and the commitment of congregations to worship, education and community service.

Early Missionary and Educational Work

Christian mission grew in and around Jayankondam in the early twentieth century. In 1907, the missionary J. A. Hoare (Sherock) contributed to the development of mission work. Educational initiatives were also established, including a school and, later, support for students’ learning.

Growth of the Congregation

Christian ministry expanded through the involvement of local families, clergy and church workers. The congregation’s development included efforts to establish and maintain a suitable place of worship, while educational activities supported the wider community. The church’s history reflects the sustained commitment of the people who helped the congregation grow.

Church Building and Dedication

A church building was built on 30 November 1939, followed by a dedication service. A further dedication took place on 30 November 1987, by Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Paul Raj. Later milestones include dedications associated with Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. James Srinivasan on 20 April 2006 and Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. G. Paul Vasanthakumar on 22 March 2009.

Continuing Ministry

Jayankondam’s Christian community continues to uphold worship, fellowship and service. The contribution of missionaries, church leaders, educators and congregation members forms an important part of the pastorate’s heritage and continues to inspire its ongoing ministry.

“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.”
