The history

The story of Christ the Lord Church

Christ the Lord Church, Anaikadu, is part of the long history of Christian mission and congregational life in the Thanjavur region. Its history recalls the work of early missionaries, the growth of Christian communities and the building and renewal of places of worship. Across the generations, the church’s story has been shaped by faith, perseverance and the commitment of local families and church leaders.

Early Missionary Work in the Region

The beginnings of the mission go back to the early nineteenth century. Missionary J. C. Kohlhoff worked in the region around 1807, and other missionaries travelled through it, establishing Christian communities and supporting worship and education. Missionary activity is also associated with the year 1827, as the church’s presence in the area continued to develop.

These early efforts formed part of a wider movement of Christian mission in the Thanjavur region. Through preaching, pastoral care and the support of local believers, Christian communities took root and gradually established places for regular worship.

The Growth of the Congregation

Further developments followed in the nineteenth century, including missionary service associated with 1849. The congregation grew, and its worshipping life was gradually strengthened. Local families, church workers and missionaries played an important part in sustaining Christian fellowship through changing circumstances.

Church and school facilities were also developed, showing how worship and education contributed to the life of the community.

Church Development and Renewal

A significant development in 1933 was connected with the establishment or improvement of church facilities. The Anaikadu church, which had deteriorated over time, was renovated in 2008. These efforts helped to preserve the congregation’s place of worship and enabled it to continue serving the community.

The history also tells of the World Redeemer Church in Pattukkottai, where a smaller building was expanded into a larger church in 1998. It belongs to the wider regional history of the church and is distinct from the Anaikadu congregation.

A Continuing Witness of Faith

Christ the Lord Church, Anaikadu, stands within a heritage of missionary witness, local commitment and continuing renewal. Its history honours those who carried the Gospel to the region, the families who sustained the congregation and the church leaders who helped to preserve its worshipping life.

As part of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, the Anaikadu congregation looks to the future with gratitude and hope. May the church remain a welcoming place of prayer, fellowship and spiritual growth, bearing witness to Christ’s love in the community for generations to come.
