The story of St. John’s Church
St. John’s Church, Aranthangi, stands as a testimony to the faith and perseverance of a congregation that grew from humble beginnings into an established place of worship. Its history recalls the early years, when services were held in a simple thatched shelter, and the shared efforts of the congregation and church leaders to build, dedicate and later renew a permanent church. Its story is one of trust in God, faithful service and community commitment.
Humble Beginnings
In its early years, the congregation gathered for worship in a thatched shelter. Though its place of worship was modest, the faith of the people remained steadfast. Over time, the congregation grew in its desire to establish a permanent church building where worship, prayer and fellowship could flourish.
Laying the Foundation for a Church
A major milestone came on 16 September 1990, when the foundation stone of the church was laid. Rt. Rev. Dr. R. Paul Raj was involved in this important occasion. The congregation continued to work towards completing the building, supported by the commitment of its members and the wider church community.
Dedication of the Church in 1996
The church building was completed and opened for worship on 21 April 1996, with Rt. Rev. Dr. R. Paul Raj presiding at the dedication. This was a defining moment for the congregation: worship that had begun modestly in a thatched shelter now had a permanent spiritual home for the people of Aranthangi.
Renewal for a New Generation
A further phase of church development came in 2008, associated with the ministry of Rt. Rev. Dr. G. Paul Vasanthakumar. In 2021, the church was renovated and rededicated, and Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Chandrasekaran was associated with the opening of the renewed building. These milestones reflect the congregation’s desire to care for its church and preserve it as a welcoming place of worship for future generations.
A Continuing Witness of Faith
From a humble thatched shelter to a dedicated church building and its later renewal, St. John’s Church, Aranthangi, bears witness to the faith, generosity and perseverance of its congregation. Its history honours the leaders and members whose prayers, labour and commitment helped to establish and sustain this place of worship.
As part of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, St. John’s Church looks ahead with gratitude and hope. May it continue to be a home of prayer, fellowship and spiritual renewal, sharing the love of Christ with the people of Aranthangi for generations to come.
“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain.”
