The story of Christ the King Church
Christ the King Church at Kottai, Thanjavur, belongs to a rich heritage of Christian mission in the Cauvery delta. Its story runs through early European missionary activity, the growth of Christian communities, the establishment of worship and education, and the church’s continuing service to local people. Its history is a testimony to faith sustained across generations and to the enduring partnership between missionaries and the communities they served.
Early Missionary Presence in Thanjavur
The story begins in 1762, when Jesuit missionaries were active in the Thanjavur region. In 1772, a Jesuit mission was established in the area, with pastoral work and community outreach forming part of its ministry. Protestant missionary work also arrived, and the presence of Christian communities grew during the late eighteenth century.
In 1773, a new church was built under the leadership of missionary Christian Friedrich Schwartz (C. F. Schwartz), who travelled to Stuttgart in the same year. Other missionaries also supported the growth of Christian worship and education in the region.
Building a Church and Supporting the Community
In 1776, missionary Johann Friedrich Haeckert (given in Tamil as “Henry Hacket”) helped to establish a small church and a theological training centre. A church-building initiative associated with Schwartz followed in 1779, supported by a donation of 6,00,000 rupees and 3,000 pagodas. The church was completed or formally established during this period, and the Latin inscription “RECUUM CONSTRUCTIA EST 1779” is recorded in its history.
In 1780, a school or educational institution was established to serve the local community. The church’s architectural features include a small bell tower, and a Latin inscription is associated with the building. These details reflect the close relationship between worship, education and community life in the church’s early history.
Mission, Education and Local Leadership
The church and its educational work served people from different social backgrounds. Local Christians, teachers and church workers helped to sustain the congregation. Over time, the mission’s work expanded through preaching, education and practical service, helping Christian communities to become more established in the region.
Missionary activity continued in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, including the work of J. C. Kohlhoff and other leaders. Their efforts contributed to the development of congregations and schools, and to the continuing growth of Christian life in and around Thanjavur.
A Living Heritage of Faith
The history of Christ the King Church, Kottai, is part of the wider story of Christian mission in Thanjavur. It honours the missionaries, educators, clergy and local families whose commitment helped to establish places of worship and learning, and whose service sustained the community through changing times.
With gratitude for this heritage, the congregation looks to the future in faith. May Christ the King Church continue to be a place of prayer, learning, fellowship and compassionate service, bearing witness to the love of Christ in Thanjavur for generations to come.
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given… and he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
