The history

The story of Christ the King Church

Christ the King Church, Rajapudukottai, is a testimony to the faith, perseverance and shared commitment of a Christian community that grew from humble beginnings. Established through the initiative of local families and church leaders, the congregation developed from a small worshipping community into an enduring spiritual home. Its history reflects generations of prayer, pastoral service and collective effort to establish and renew a place of worship.

The Beginnings of the Congregation

The congregation began with about 10 families. In its early period, worship was held in a rented, tiled-roof building near the school in Pudukkottai. The determination of local Christians and the guidance of church leaders helped the community to establish regular worship and strengthen its identity within the Church of South India.

A Pastorate Takes Shape

On 29 November 1979, regular worship and the organised life of the congregation took a significant step forward, with diocesan leaders and Rev. M. Appusamy supporting the growth of the church community. During this period, Holy Communion services were held on designated Sundays, helping to nurture the congregation’s spiritual life and fellowship.

Building a Permanent Place of Worship

By God’s grace and through the dedication of the congregation, the foundation of a permanent church was laid on 16 July 1983 at Janaki Nagar, Pudukkottai. The church was dedicated on 25 November 1984, in an event associated with Rt. Rev. Dr. Paul Raj. Further work on the church premises followed, including work on 15 December 1985.

Expansion and Renewal

The church continued to develop through the following decades. There were further improvements and land-related developments, including the acquisition of about one acre and 10 cents for church purposes. These efforts created opportunities to strengthen the congregation’s facilities and support its growing worshipping community.

A new church building was opened on 28 November 2017, an important milestone in the life of the pastorate. It reflected the continuing commitment of church leaders and members to provide a welcoming and enduring place for worship, prayer and fellowship.

Pastoral Leadership Through the Years

Successive pastors have guided the congregation through the different stages of its development. Their ministries form part of the church’s continuing story of pastoral care and spiritual growth.

A Living Community of Faith

The congregation has grown to about 100 families. Its journey honours the pastors, church workers, officers and families whose prayers, generosity and service have helped to sustain the church and its ministry.

As part of the Rajapudukottai Pastorate in the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, the church continues to look to the future with gratitude and hope. May Christ the King Church remain a place of worship, fellowship and spiritual renewal, sharing Christ’s love with the community for generations to come.

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.”
Psalm 28:7
