The history

The story of St. Andrew’s Church

St. Andrew’s Church, Thanjavur, grew from the faith and determination of Christian families who settled in the city’s expanding residential neighbourhoods. As new communities took shape along the Thanjavur–Nanjikottai Road, families living in areas such as Postal Colony, Teachers’ Colony, Electricity Board Colony and Karunavathi Nagar sought a place of worship closer to home. Their shared vision and perseverance led to a local congregation that would become a lasting spiritual home for generations.

The Beginnings of a Local Congregation

In the early years, Christian families in these neighbourhoods travelled to Kottai Christ the Lord Church for worship. Limited transport and the distance from their homes made regular attendance difficult. Recognising this need, the families came together and approached the church’s leaders to ask for a place of worship in their own locality.

With the support of diocesan leaders and the cooperation of the congregation, worship at St. Andrew’s began on 27 May 1990. The inaugural service was conducted in the presence of Rev. J. Philip Raj, with the participation of Rev. G. Gnanasagam and Rev. M. Masilamani. This marked the beginning of an organised worshipping community rooted in fellowship, prayer and shared commitment.

A Growing Worshipping Community

In 1993, the congregation developed as a distinct worshipping community under the leadership of Rev. D. Vincent. Plans were made to establish a permanent church at Karunavathi Nagar. Rev. M. Swamikannu served from 1994, guiding the congregation through an important period of growth and organisation. The church community continued to strengthen its worship, fellowship and outreach, supported by the dedication of local families and church leaders.

A Permanent Church and a New Chapter

Through shared effort and generous support, the congregation worked towards a permanent church building. The church was completed in 1996, and a significant dedication celebration was held on 30 November 1996. The occasion was an important milestone in the life of St. Andrew’s Church, providing a settled place for worship and a visible centre of Christian fellowship in the neighbourhood.

Over the years, the church continued to serve its surrounding communities, welcoming families and nurturing spiritual life. The congregation’s growth reflects the commitment of members who gave their time, prayers and resources to sustain the church and its ministry.

Renewal and Community Life

The church’s ministry has continued through successive generations of pastoral leadership. In 2016, the church building was renovated, renewing the worship space and supporting the congregation’s ongoing life. The church also continued to organise worship, fellowship and community gatherings, strengthening relationships among its members and neighbours.

The congregation has grown to about 100 families, and its annual celebrations and community events continue. These milestones reflect a church sustained not only by its building but by the faith, generosity and unity of its people.

A Continuing Witness of Faith

From the first gathering of Christian families to the building of a permanent church and its later renewal, St. Andrew’s Church, Thanjavur, stands as a witness to faith, perseverance and community. Its history honours the clergy, church leaders and families whose prayers and service helped to build and sustain this congregation.

As part of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, St. Andrew’s Church continues its calling to be a welcoming home of prayer, fellowship and spiritual growth. May the church remain a beacon of Christ’s love in Thanjavur, serving the community with compassion and hope for generations to come.
