The history

The story of Christ Church

Christ Church, Thiruvarur, traces its history to the period of the English mission and the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG). The church is said to have a history of more than a century. Over time, the building was renovated while keeping its traditional character; during the renovation, its orientation was changed to face east.

A Heritage of Faith and Worship

The congregation grew within the wider church network of the region. As the work developed, Thiruvarur came to be recognised as a separate pastorate on 4 December 1982.

Continuing Ministry

The congregation continued to develop, and diocesan leadership played a part in its growth. Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Chandrasekaran is remembered in connection with efforts that supported the church’s development and its pastoral organisation.

Today, Christ Church, Thiruvarur, stands as part of the continuing witness of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, carrying forward a legacy shaped by worship, fellowship and service.

A Legacy of Faith

Through the changing generations, the church’s story reflects the perseverance of its congregation and the enduring place of Christian worship in Thiruvarur. Its history remains part of the wider mission and ministry of the Diocese.
