The history

The story of All Saints Church

The history of All Saints Church, Puthur, is woven into the wider story of Christian mission in Tiruchirappalli. It tells of missionaries, of a congregation that grew, of the pastors who served it one after another and of the steady provision of places for worship, Christian education and fellowship. Across generations, the church’s story is one of faith expressed through prayer, learning, generosity and service to the community.

Early Christian Witness in Tiruchirappalli

Christian missionary work in Tiruchirappalli goes back to the early nineteenth century. Missionaries of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) and of other missions helped to establish and nurture congregations in the region. Among the early figures were Rev. D. Rosen, missionaries of the SPCK and other clergy who served in successive periods.

The church also remembers Rev. Robert Caldwell, later Assistant Bishop to the Bishop of Madras, whose work included a deep interest in education and in the Tamil language. Missionary work went hand in hand with the growth of Christian learning and the emergence of local leadership, laying the foundations of congregational life in Tiruchirappalli.

A Place for Worship and a Growing Congregation

As church life developed in Puthur, efforts were made to provide a suitable place of worship. Arrangements were made for land, and the church’s buildings were built and improved as the congregation grew. This progress depended on the commitment of clergy, church members and supporters, who gave their time, resources and labour.

Over time, the congregation became not only a place of worship but also a centre of Christian fellowship and education. Sunday School, the formation of children and other activities became part of the church’s continuing ministry.

Pastoral Leadership Across Generations

Successive pastors and church leaders have served the congregation over many decades. Their ministry has been one of worship, teaching, encouragement and practical care. Lay members and church groups have sustained the congregation alongside them, supporting children and young people and helping to improve the church premises.

Faith Expressed Through Service

The history of All Saints Church, Puthur, is more than a record of buildings and dates. It tells of a community sustained by worship, shaped by pastoral leadership and strengthened by members who gave generously to the life of the church. Its educational work, its facilities for children, its choir and its practical support for families reflect a faith that reaches into everyday life.

As part of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, All Saints Church continues to cherish the legacy entrusted to it. With gratitude for those who came before and hope for those yet to come, the congregation is called to deepen its fellowship, nurture faith across generations and share Christ’s love with the wider community.
