The story of St. Andrew’s Church
St. Andrew’s Church, LIC Colony, Tiruchirappalli, grew from the faith and fellowship of Christian families who settled in the area and sought a place to worship together. Its history tells of the steady growth of a local congregation, the commitment of its members and the ministry of successive church leaders. From its beginnings in the 1980s, the church became a spiritual home for families and a centre for worship, fellowship and service.
The Beginnings of the Congregation
LIC Colony was a growing residential neighbourhood in Tiruchirappalli, with families arriving from different places and a community shaped by employment, education and changing urban life. As the number of Christian families increased, the need for a place of worship nearby became clear. The congregation’s beginnings were marked by prayer, cooperation and a shared desire to establish a lasting Christian presence in the locality.
Establishing a Place of Worship
Work towards establishing St. Andrew’s Church began in 1983. The congregation gradually organised its worship and community life, with the support of church leaders and local members. In 1987, further steps were taken to develop the church in LIC Colony, and the congregation continued to grow as families came together for worship and fellowship.
A significant milestone followed in 1990, when the church was dedicated during the ministry of Rev. Dr. P. Barnabas, Bishop. The dedication established a recognised place of worship and gave the congregation a spiritual home in the neighbourhood.
A Growing and Active Congregation
The congregation has grown and takes an active part in the life of the church. Families, women’s groups, youth, children and other fellowship groups are all involved, and their activities support worship, Christian formation, mutual care and community participation.
The surrounding area is also home to educational institutions and a range of community organisations. In this setting, St. Andrew’s Church has served as a place where Christian families can nurture their faith, build relationships and contribute to the well-being of the wider neighbourhood.
Leadership and Shared Responsibility
Church leaders and members helped the congregation to grow, supporting its development through pastoral ministry, administration, practical work and financial contributions. The service of the Bishop and other office-bearers, including the treasurer, the secretary and members of the church community, is also acknowledged.
The church’s progress has depended on shared responsibility: clergy providing pastoral guidance, office-bearers supporting administration, and members giving their time, gifts and resources. This spirit of cooperation remains central to the congregation’s heritage.
Serving Families and the Wider Community
St. Andrew’s is a congregation that seeks to serve people as well as to gather for worship. Through its fellowship groups and activities, the church encourages care for families, support for children and young people, and a spirit of mutual help. These ministries are part of the church’s continuing witness in LIC Colony.
The congregation has grown to more than 400 families. This reflects the sustained commitment of generations of worshippers and the importance of the church as a spiritual home for a broad and growing community.
A Continuing Legacy of Faith
From its beginnings in 1983 to a congregation of more than 400 families, St. Andrew’s Church, LIC Colony, stands as a testimony to faith strengthened through fellowship and service. Its history honours those who helped to establish the church and those who continue to nurture its life through worship, Christian formation and community care.
As part of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, St. Andrew’s Church looks to the future with gratitude and hope. May it continue to be a welcoming place of prayer, a community that grows in Christ and a witness to God’s love in Tiruchirappalli.
“I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.”
