The story of Risen Lord Church
The history of Risen Lord Church, Manapparai, tells of a long Christian witness shaped by worship, education and care for vulnerable communities. The church’s beginnings go back to the early twentieth century, and its ministries grew through the dedication of missionaries, clergy, church members and community supporters. Across the decades, the congregation’s story has been closely bound up with the establishment of places of worship, educational work and practical support for children and families.
Early Mission and the First Place of Worship
SPG missionaries worked in Manapparai. Around 1912, a small chapel was established near the Valakulam Road junction, giving the town a local place for Christian worship. This early step laid a foundation for the growth of the congregation and its continuing ministry in the town.
In 1921, land was registered for church-related purposes in the Koothapatti area. Developments associated with the railway connection to Manapparai followed in 1936, and land was provided for a church in 1939. A site of about 7.5 cents was secured, enabling the congregation to establish a more settled presence.
A Church and a Ministry of Education
From its early days, the church was concerned for children’s education. A primary school was established in 1946, and school activities and church ministry became closely connected. The school served local families and reflected the Christian commitment to nurture children through learning and care.
A small orphanage was established in 1948. In 1949, the work was expanded to include children from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This ministry gave practical expression to the church’s concern for children who needed safety, education and support.
Extending Care for Children and Families
The children’s ministry was developed further with help from KNH, in connection with work undertaken around 1969. Buildings and facilities were developed to support the care and education of children. These efforts reflect the contribution of church leaders, staff and supporters who helped to sustain the ministry over time.
Church workers were appointed and served, along with those responsible for the children’s home and school. Together, these ministries formed an important part of the church’s wider witness in Manapparai, extending its service beyond the congregation to children and families in need.
Pastoral Ministry and Church Facilities
As the congregation and its ministries grew, attention was given to providing suitable facilities for worship and pastoral service. A parsonage was built and dedicated in the late 1970s, and 23 December 1978 stands out as a significant date. School facilities and public educational provision were also developed during 1978–1979.
Church and ministry facilities were later improved, including parsonage-related work in 2008. These milestones show the congregation’s continuing effort to support pastoral ministry and to provide suitable spaces for worship, education and community care.
Renewal and Continuing Service
The church’s ministry and facilities developed further during the 2010s and early 2020s. This included a prayer house or other worship-related development in 2018 and further church-related work around 2020–2021. A building was dedicated by Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Samuel Rajadurai, Bishop of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, in 2021.
A 75th-year milestone was observed for the children’s home or a related ministry. The anniversary was an opportunity to give thanks for generations of caregivers, educators, church leaders and supporters whose work has helped children and families to experience care, dignity and hope.
A Living Witness of the Risen Lord
Risen Lord Church, Manapparai, carries a heritage in which worship and service belong together. From its early chapel to its educational and child-care work, the church’s history bears witness to a faith expressed through practical compassion. Its continuing calling is to nurture Christian life, support children and families, and serve the wider community with humility and love.
With gratitude for those who laid its foundations, the congregation looks to the future in the hope of the Risen Christ, continuing to be a place of worship, fellowship, learning and compassionate service.
“I am the resurrection and the life.”
