The history

The story of St. Peter’s Church

The story of St. Peter’s Church, Kailasapuram, is closely connected with the growth of industrial Tiruchirappalli and the arrival of Christian families who came to the city for employment. As the community grew, these families sought not only a place to worship but also a spiritual home where they could nurture their children, support one another and serve their neighbours. The church’s history reflects a lasting commitment to faith, fellowship and practical care.

The Beginnings: Christian Families in a Growing Industrial City

The congregation’s early growth is linked with the expansion of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), which began operations in Tiruchirappalli in 1963. During 1963–1964, officers and employees from different parts of South India came to work at BHEL. The Christian families among them at first travelled to churches in other parts of Tiruchirappalli, including established congregations in the city. As their number grew, they needed a place for worship and fellowship closer to their homes.

Church leaders and clergy were involved from the early days in meeting the spiritual needs of these families. In the years that followed, the congregation grew through prayer, pastoral care and the cooperation of its members.

A Place of Worship Takes Shape

In 1965, a small church was established on land made available in the BHEL area, with the participation and support of local families. A service of dedication was held on 24 November 1968. This was an important milestone for the congregation, giving it a regular place for worship and Christian fellowship.

The church was later renovated and improved. This work was undertaken as the congregation grew and its needs changed, and it reflects the community’s determination to keep a welcoming and suitable place of worship.

Pastoral Leadership and Congregational Growth

Several pastors and church leaders served the congregation and helped it grow. Among them was Rev. Charles Raman, who, with other clergy, provided pastoral leadership, encouraged worship and supported the growth of the church community. Church leaders associated with the BHEL community and the wider CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese are also remembered.

Through the years, the church’s life has included regular worship, Christian formation, fellowship and support for families. The congregation’s growth was sustained by the faithful involvement of members, church workers and leaders who gave their time and resources.

Ministry Beyond the Church Building

The congregation has also responded to practical needs in the community. Its initiatives include support for church workers through a Church Workers Welfare Fund, and the “Gospel to Poor” initiative, launched on 31 August 1994, which sought to help people in need through practical assistance and acts of Christian care. The congregation continued this service over many years, with the participation of church members and leaders.

Families were also cared for in times of bereavement, including help with funeral-related needs. These ministries express the congregation’s conviction that Christian faith is lived not only in worship but also through compassion, solidarity and service to neighbours.

A Jubilee of Thanksgiving

The church celebrated its golden jubilee in 2015, marking 50 years of congregational life from 1965 to 2015. Over the preceding 57 years, 22 pastors had served the congregation. The anniversary was an opportunity to give thanks for the clergy, church workers, families and supporters whose dedication helped to shape the church’s history.

A two-storey building was renovated and dedicated on 24 April 2022 by Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Samuel Rajadurai, Bishop of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. This is a more recent milestone in the church’s continuing story.

A Living Witness of Faith and Service

St. Peter’s Church, Kailasapuram, stands as a witness to the faith and perseverance of generations of Christian families in Tiruchirappalli. From its beginnings among industrial workers to its ministries of welfare and community support, the church has sought to be a place of prayer, fellowship and compassionate service.

As it looks to the future, the congregation gives thanks for those who laid its foundations and continues its calling to nurture faith, strengthen community and share the love of Christ with all. Its heritage is preserved not only in buildings and anniversaries but also in the ongoing service and fellowship through which faith becomes visible in everyday life.

“Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
