The history

The story of Christ the King Church

The story of Christ the King Church, Ordnance Factory (OFT), Tiruchirappalli, is rooted in the faith and fellowship of Christian families who came to the area for work and sought a place to worship together. As industry grew around Tiruchirappalli, these families worked patiently to establish a congregation and, in time, a permanent church. Their journey shows the strength of shared prayer, pastoral care and community commitment.

A Congregation Takes Root

The congregation’s beginnings are linked with the establishment of the Small Arms Project (SAP) at the Ordnance Factory in 1966, and with the growth of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), which began operations in the region in 1964. Christian employees who came to work in these establishments at first worshipped in their homes or travelled to churches elsewhere in Tiruchirappalli. As the number of families in the OFT area increased, the need for a nearby place of worship became more pressing.

The church remembers the early ministry of Rev. J. W. A. White and other church leaders who helped to meet the spiritual needs of the growing community. Worship and fellowship were organised before the congregation had a permanent church building. These early efforts laid the foundation for a worshipping community united by faith and a shared hope for the future.

From Early Gatherings to a Permanent Church

As the congregation grew, church leaders and members worked to provide land and a permanent place of worship. A site was acquired in the OFT area, and efforts were made to raise funds for construction. Contributions from church members and supporters helped to move the project forward, despite the practical and financial challenges involved.

The church building was completed and dedicated on 22 December 1985 under the name Christ the King Church, OFT, Tiruchirappalli. This dedication was a defining milestone in the congregation’s journey: a permanent spiritual home for Christian families in the area and a centre for worship, fellowship and Christian formation.

In the years that followed, church facilities were further built and improved, including provision for the congregation’s worship, fellowship and children’s Christian formation.

Pastoral Leadership and Congregational Life

A succession of ministers has served the congregation since 1965. Their ministries have supported worship, pastoral visitation, Christian education and the steady development of church life.

A Continuing Witness in the Community

The church’s ministries involve children and young people, women’s groups and other congregational fellowships. Its life also reflects its relationship with the wider community and the importance of serving people with compassion. Through worship, Christian formation and fellowship, Christ the King Church seeks to nurture faith and encourage members to live out the Gospel in everyday life.

The church’s history is a testimony to the faithfulness of generations of worshippers, the ministry of successive pastors and the generosity of those who helped to build and sustain the congregation. With gratitude for its beginnings and hope for the future, Christ the King Church, OFT, continues its calling to be a welcoming spiritual home and a witness to Christ’s love in Tiruchirappalli.

“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.”
Psalm 126:3
