The story of Kattur Pastorate
The story of Kattur Pastorate is one of faith taking root close to home. In the early years, Christian families living in Kattur, many of them connected with work at BHEL, had to travel to Ponmalai or Kailasapuram for worship. Their longing for a nearby place to gather, pray and nurture their families became the seed of a local congregation.
The Beginnings of a Congregation
In 1994, a small group of 12 families began gathering for worship in rented first-floor premises. Prayer meetings and services were held with the support of church leaders and clergy. This humble beginning brought together families who shared a desire to establish a regular place of worship in Kattur.
A Place to Call Their Own
As the congregation grew, members and supporters worked towards securing land and establishing a permanent church. Land was purchased and a modest church building was built. A small cement-block church, valued at about ₹2,00,000, was dedicated on 1 December 1996, giving the growing congregation a place of its own for worship and fellowship.
Growth and a New Church Building
By June 2001, when Rev. C. Pradeep was serving the congregation, the church community had grown to around 52 families, and the need for a larger building was becoming clear. A contribution of ₹3,50,000 was made towards the church’s development, and members remained committed to supporting its growth.
In June 2002, Rev. G. Jeyasingh took up pastoral leadership. With the congregation growing and more children and families taking part in church life, plans for a new building were taken forward. The foundation stone was laid on 3 August 2003, and the new church was dedicated on 7 April 2004. The construction cost was ₹20,00,000. The project was made possible by the generosity and shared effort of the congregation and its well-wishers.
Faith Expressed Through Generosity
The pastorate remembers the individuals who supported the church’s development through personal giving and practical help. In a spirit of sacrifice, members and friends contributed according to their means so that the congregation could worship in a suitable and welcoming space. Their generosity remains an important part of the pastorate’s heritage.
A Growing Fellowship
Kattur Pastorate continues to serve a congregation of about 75 families. Its life is sustained by worship, fellowship and the participation of families across generations.
A Continuing Witness of Hope
From 12 families meeting in rented premises to a growing congregation worshipping in its own church, Kattur Pastorate bears witness to what faith, unity and perseverance can accomplish. With gratitude for those who laid its foundations, the congregation continues its journey of worship and service, seeking to be a place of welcome, spiritual growth and Christian fellowship for the community.
“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”
