The story of St. Matthew’s Church
The history of St. Matthew’s Church, Allithurai, is part of the wider story of Methodist Christian mission in the Tiruchirappalli region. The Wesleyan Methodist Mission worked in the area, and worship, education and congregational life grew through the dedication of missionaries, pastors, teachers and local families. The church’s heritage reflects a faith that has taken root through prayer, learning and service across generations.
The Wesleyan Methodist Mission in Tiruchirappalli
The Wesleyan Methodist Mission began its work in Tiruchirappalli in 1820, and its ministry gradually extended to nearby communities. Allithurai was among the villages where mission work was established, and work there began in 1892. This formed part of the wider growth of Christian worship and education in the region.
The Beginnings of the Allithurai Congregation
Allithurai was an important station in the growth of Methodist mission work. There was a period of sustained activity from 1875 to 1902, and the church remembers the missionaries and local workers who supported the congregation and its educational work. Land was purchased on 21 July 1892 for ₹70, a significant step towards a stable base for mission and community work.
The early mission is associated with the development of a Wesleyan school and the gradual strengthening of the local congregation. Worship and education grew alongside one another, providing a place of Christian formation and learning for the children of the community.
Education as a Foundation for Service
Education runs through this history. A school connected with the Wesleyan Methodist Mission was established and developed, supported by teachers and church leaders over successive generations. Land for school purposes was purchased on 16 March 1887 for ₹40, an early milestone in the provision of education in the area.
School leadership and facilities developed later, through the service of teachers and head teachers, and educational work continued to grow during the twentieth century. These details reflect the close relationship between the church’s spiritual mission and its commitment to learning and the welfare of children.
Growth and Renewal Across Generations
Church and school work continued to develop through the twentieth century, with changes in leadership, improvements to facilities and the expansion of educational provision. Local church leaders and the wider Methodist community were involved in sustaining this work. There was also a significant church-related development in 1985.
