The story of St. Paul’s Church

St. Paul’s Church, Woriyur, Tiruchirappalli, carries a heritage shaped by Methodist mission, Christian education and the faith of generations of worshippers. Its history tells of the growth of mission work in the region, the building of schools and church facilities, and the service of successive pastors. It is the story of a congregation whose spiritual life has been strengthened through worship, learning and shared service.

The Beginnings of Mission and Education

The wider mission context of the church goes back to 1847. Methodist missionary work expanded in the Tiruchirappalli region, and 1885 was an important year in the development of the Methodist mission associated with Woriyur. Mission work included not only worship and evangelism but also education and practical service to local communities.

As the mission developed, schools were established to give children opportunities to learn. There was educational work in the surrounding area, including the growth of primary schooling. These initiatives formed an important part of the church’s witness, linking Christian faith with education and community development.

The Growth of Tamil-Medium Education

Tamil-medium education developed in 1932 under the leadership of Rev. John D. Muthaiah. Further educational activity followed in 1934, including the use of Tamil in Christian teaching and school-related work. These milestones reflect an effort to make education and Christian formation accessible to local families in their own language.

Through the years, the church’s educational ministry grew alongside congregational life. Teachers, missionaries and church leaders contributed to school facilities and learning opportunities, helping children and young people to build foundations for the future.

A New Chapter in the Life of the Church

The year 1947 marked a significant transition with the formation of the Church of South India. Rev. Paul Renga Ramanujam served the congregation during this period, and the work of Rev. Christopher Thobam continued. These leaders helped to guide the church through a time of institutional change and congregational development.

In 1952 Bishop Edgar B. Thorp consecrated the church, and further construction or improvement followed in 1954. In 1960 a new school building was constructed, strengthening the educational work associated with the church and supporting the needs of the local community.

Pastoral Leadership Across Generations

A succession of ministers has served St. Paul’s Church and its congregation. Rev. Mrs. Mary Selvarani served as an assistant minister, and the service of its clergy spans the period from 1970 to 2020. Rev. Sureshkumar’s ministry began in 1994.

A Continuing Ministry of Worship and Service

St. Paul’s Church, Woriyur, has continued to bring together worship, Christian formation and educational service. Its history honours the missionaries, pastors, teachers, church workers and families who helped to establish and sustain the congregation. The church’s educational work is a reminder that Christian witness is expressed not only through worship but also through opportunities for learning and the service of the wider community.

As part of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese, St. Paul’s Church looks to the future with gratitude for its heritage and hope for generations to come. May it continue to be a place of prayer, fellowship and learning, sharing the love of Christ through faithful worship and compassionate service.
