The story of Chinnaputhur Church
“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” — Psalm 126:3
Chinnaputhur Church is situated in Chinnaputhur village, approximately 11 kilometres north of Dharapuram on the Dharapuram–Pollachi road. The congregation belongs to the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese and is now within the Udumalpet area. Its ministry has extended to Chinnaputhur and a number of neighbouring hamlets, serving Christian families across the surrounding rural communities.
Historical Overview
In 1922, the locality had a population of about 500 people, living in approximately 125 households. The growth of Christian witness in the area was associated with the commitment of local families and the ministry of Christian workers who travelled to nearby settlements, shared the Gospel and nurtured the emerging congregation. The church’s early outreach reached several villages in the region.
An important milestone in the congregation’s development was the construction of its church building, completed on 28 March 1931 through the efforts and contributions of the local Christian community. The building provided a permanent place for worship and fellowship and became a focal point for the congregation’s spiritual life. The church’s growth was supported by the service of pastors, evangelists, teachers and lay members.
Education became an important part of the church’s contribution to the locality. A CSI primary school was established in 1932, providing educational opportunities for children from Chinnaputhur and nearby villages. The school’s work developed over the years, with efforts made to improve its facilities and provide a suitable learning environment. The church’s educational ministry has complemented its spiritual and pastoral work.
The congregation’s ministry also developed through Christian instruction, Sunday School, pastoral visitation and fellowship. Successive Christian workers and ministers were involved, including D. K. Aasirvatham and other clergy who served the community. Their efforts, together with the dedication of local believers, helped to strengthen the congregation and its outreach.
In 1984, Chinnaputhur was organised as a separate congregation or pastorate, with its ministry extending across seven worshipping centres in the surrounding area: Ambalapatti, Punjapatti, Chinnaputhur, Ponnapuram, Periyaputhur, Chettipalayam and Narayanapuram. Over time, church buildings and places of worship were established or improved in these centres, enabling the congregations to gather for worship and fellowship closer to their communities.
The pastorate’s continuing development has been supported by successive ministers, church workers and local leaders. The commitment of its members and the support of the Diocese continue to sustain the church’s spiritual, educational and community life.
Continuing Witness
Today, the CSI Chinnaputhur Pastorate continues its witness through worship, Christian education, Sunday School, pastoral care and fellowship among its village congregations. Its journey reflects the faith and perseverance of generations of believers who have helped to nurture Christian life in Chinnaputhur and the surrounding communities.
“Let us not grow weary in doing what is right.”
