The story of Christ Church

“I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’” — Psalm 122:1

Christ Church, Udumalpet, is part of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. Its history is rooted in the Methodist missionary presence in the Dharapuram–Udumalpet region and in the growth of Christian congregations in the surrounding communities. The Methodist Missionary Society began its work in Dharapuram in the late nineteenth century, with 1881 recorded as an important year. Its ministry included evangelism and the development of educational, medical and community welfare initiatives.

Historical Overview

As Christian work expanded in the region, the need for a more established centre at Udumalpet was recognised. In 1923, steps were taken to establish a mission centre and provide accommodation for its ministry. Land on the Palani Road was identified for this purpose, and the mission’s presence in Udumalpet gradually developed. The early work was supported by the Wesleyan Methodist missionary tradition and the commitment of local Christian families.

The mission property, including a substantial tract of land, was acquired and registered, and was later used for the development of the church’s ministry. The property was associated with the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Trust before being transferred to the South India Church. A transfer dated 11 May 1961 was followed by registration in the relevant Sub-Registrar’s Office under document reference 2146/61.

The congregation continued to develop through worship, evangelism, pastoral care and the formation of local Christian communities. A church building was dedicated on 31 October 1999 by the Diocese’s leadership, a significant milestone in the life of the congregation. Further facilities were added, and a church hall was dedicated on 1 May 2006, providing more space for worship-related gatherings and congregational activities.

The period from 1994 to 2006 was a phase of active congregational development. On 1 April 2008, a worshipping community that had functioned as a branch of the Udumalpet congregation was organised as a separate congregation. These developments reflect the continuing growth of Christian witness and the expansion of congregational life in the area.

Across the years, the ministry of Christ Church has been sustained by successive pastors, church workers and lay members. Their service has nurtured Christian faith, strengthened fellowship and supported the church’s continuing contribution to the spiritual and social life of Udumalpet and its surrounding communities.

Continuing Witness

Today, Christ Church, Udumalpet, continues its ministry through worship, prayer, pastoral care, Christian nurture and community engagement. With gratitude for its missionary foundations and the generations who have sustained its work, the congregation remains committed to sharing the Gospel and serving its community.

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
Acts 2:42
