The story of Madathukulam Pastorate
The Christian witness in the Madathukulam region has its roots in missionary work undertaken in the area more than a century and a half ago. The early work formed part of the wider village ministry of the Udumalpet Town Pastorate. Its outreach extended across several villages, nurturing Christian congregations and strengthening the presence of the Church in the surrounding region.
Historical Beginnings
From 1983 to 1987, the ministry in this region received significant attention through the service of Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Chandrasekaran. As the work expanded, the need for a separate pastorate became increasingly evident. On 23 August 1987, Madathukulam was constituted as an independent pastorate, an important milestone in the growth and organisation of the Church in this area.
Expansion of the Pastorate
After its formation, the Madathukulam Pastorate continued to develop through the commitment of successive presbyters, evangelists, church workers and members of the congregations. Their ministry included pastoral care, evangelism, worship, Christian education and the strengthening of local church communities. The pastorate remembers the contribution of the many ministers and workers who served it over the years.
The pastorate includes congregations in Madathukulam and neighbouring villages, among them Kozhumam, R. T. Pattinam, Kaniyur, Karthozhuvu, Kannadiputhur, Komaralingam, Poolavadi Pudur and Kallapuram. The growth of these congregations reflects the sustained efforts of the Church to extend its ministry and remain rooted in the life of the local communities.
Church Development and Community Life
The building and improvement of places of worship have been important parts of the pastorate’s development. A church building at Karthozhuvu was built at a reported cost of ₹30 lakh and consecrated for worship. Further church-building work, including developments at Kannadiputhur and Komaralingam, has also formed part of the pastorate’s continuing efforts to provide suitable spaces for worship and fellowship.
Beyond the physical growth of its churches, the pastorate has sought to nurture the faith of its members and encourage active participation in the life of the Church. The service of Sunday School teachers, youth and women’s groups, evangelists and other volunteers has contributed to the spiritual formation and fellowship of the congregations.
Continuing the Mission
From its beginnings as part of the wider missionary outreach in the Udumalpet region to its establishment as a separate pastorate in 1987, Madathukulam has journeyed through generations of faith, service and community witness. The CSI Madathukulam Pastorate continues this heritage through worship, pastoral ministry, evangelism and service, seeking to strengthen its congregations and share the love of Christ with the communities it serves.
