The history

The story of Thalavaipattinam Pastorate

The Christian witness in the Thalavaipattinam region developed through the missionary outreach of the Church in the surrounding villages. Early congregational life was centred on Thalavaipattinam and extended to neighbouring places, including Somanur, Kangeyampalayam and other nearby villages. Through evangelistic ministry, pastoral care and Christian teaching, the faith community gradually took root and grew.

Historical Beginnings

Early missionaries and ministers contributed to the establishment and nurture of the congregations. Their work included proclaiming the Gospel, providing Christian instruction and supporting the spiritual formation of the people. The early years also saw the development of educational work, which became an important expression of the Church’s commitment to the community.

In 1989, Thalavaipattinam was organised as a separate pastorate. Rev. S. Ebenezer took up the responsibility of leading and guiding the ministry during this formative period. The formation of the pastorate was a significant step in strengthening the congregations and coordinating the Church’s ministry across the surrounding villages.

Educational Ministry

Education has been an integral part of the pastorate’s service. The Church’s educational work includes the CSI Primary School at Thalavaipattinam, with six teachers and two non-teaching staff members. The school serves about 80 students. The school at Somalathupatti, with 38 students, also forms part of this educational commitment.

These institutions reflect the pastorate’s continuing concern for children’s learning and development, alongside its spiritual and pastoral responsibilities. Through its educational ministry, the Church has sought to contribute to the well-being and progress of families in the villages it serves.

Church Buildings and Congregational Growth

The development of places of worship has been another important part of the pastorate’s history. On 9 May 1993, church-building work was undertaken with the participation of Rev. Masilamani Iyer, a retired pastor, Rev. Ebenezer and members of the congregations. The building was dedicated by Rev. Paulraj.

A church building at Kangeyampalayam was also established and dedicated on 9 May 1993 by Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Paulraj. In the years that followed, the building was renovated and improved, and the renovated church was dedicated on 30 April 2006 by Rev. James Siluvai.

At Somanur, a new church building was built in 1983 and dedicated by Rt. Rev. Dr. Paulraj. Renovation work was later carried out, and the renovated building was dedicated on 19 May 2010 by Rev. Balasundarakumar. These developments reflect the commitment of the congregations and successive church leaders to provide suitable places for worship and fellowship.

The Pastorate in the Diocese

Thalavaipattinam was formerly part of the Dharapuram ecclesiastical region. From 15 June 2021, it has continued its ministry under the newly formed Udumalpet ecclesiastical region of the CSI Tiruchirappalli–Thanjavur Diocese. This administrative development has provided a renewed framework for the pastorate’s ministry and its relationship with the wider mission of the Diocese.

The CSI Thalavaipattinam Pastorate continues to build on its heritage through worship, evangelism, Christian education, pastoral care and community service. The dedication of its congregations, ministers, teachers and members remains central to its continuing witness and mission.
