The story of Koothampoondi Pastorate
“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” — Psalm 126:3
The Christian witness at Koothampoondi developed through the missionary work associated with the Dharapuram region. The congregation dates its beginnings to 1924, when the missionary Rev. J. J. Ellis began the work at Koothampoondi. In its early years, the congregation functioned within the wider Dharapuram mission.
Historical Background
The mission gradually extended to Koothampoondi and the surrounding villages, bringing Christian families together and nurturing a local congregation. The growth of the church was sustained through evangelism, worship, pastoral visitation and the commitment of local believers. The surrounding communities became part of the wider sphere of the pastorate’s ministry.
As the congregation developed, the church’s ministry included spiritual nurture, Christian teaching and pastoral care. Several villages lie within the pastorate’s area of service, reflecting the rural reach of the mission and the importance of the church as a centre for worship and fellowship.
The work was strengthened by successive pastors and church workers who served the congregation and supported its continuing development, and the ministry of Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Chandrasekaran is part of the pastorate’s history. Their service, together with the dedication of church members, contributed to the continuity of congregational life and the wider Christian witness in the region.
The congregation’s centenary in 2023 marked one hundred years since the beginnings of the church in 1924. This milestone was an opportunity to give thanks for the missionaries, pastors, church workers and members whose faith and commitment helped to establish and sustain the congregation across generations.
Continuing Witness
Today, the CSI Koothampoondi Pastorate continues the legacy of the early mission through worship, fellowship, pastoral ministry and service to the surrounding communities. Its history stands as a testimony to the enduring faith of its members and their continuing commitment to the Gospel.
“Be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord.”
