The history

The story of Kundadam Pastorate

“Declare his glory among the nations, his marvellous works among all the peoples.” — Psalm 96:3

The Christian witness in Kundadam developed as part of the wider Methodist missionary work centred on the Dharapuram region. The early mission reached Kundadam and the neighbouring villages, gradually bringing Christian families together and laying a foundation for organised congregational life.

Historical Background

The early missionary work in this region is associated with Rev. J. J. Ellis, and Christian ministry developed in and around Kundadam during the early decades of the twentieth century. The work extended to the surrounding settlements, and the congregation grew through evangelism, worship, pastoral care and the commitment of local believers.

As the Christian community grew, congregations in Kundadam and nearby villages became connected through shared worship and fellowship. A network of villages was served by this ministry, reflecting the rural reach of the mission and the part local Christians played in sustaining its work.

The development of the congregation was supported by successive pastors and church workers: more than 20 pastors served the Kundadam congregation between 1924 and 1947. In 1937, the work was organised as a separate congregation, marking an important stage in the growth and administration of the local church.

Education also formed part of the church’s contribution to the community. A primary school associated with the CSI congregation became an important element of this work, reflecting the church’s concern for children’s learning and development. Efforts to strengthen educational facilities and church life continued in later years.

Through the years, the Kundadam congregation and its surrounding worshipping communities have continued their Christian witness through worship, fellowship, pastoral ministry and community service. Their history reflects the dedication of generations of church members, ministers and lay leaders who helped to establish and sustain the church in this region.

Continuing Mission

Today, the CSI Kundadam Pastorate carries forward the legacy of early missionary endeavour and the faithfulness of the local congregation. With gratitude for those who served before them, the church continues to nurture faith, encourage fellowship and contribute to the spiritual and social well-being of the surrounding communities.
